It's been a while since I last updated the blog. Cue a long list of poor excuses. But it's mainly due to the fact that I have an addiction to the TV series 'Nashville' and that deems the iPad 'out of action'... That was number one poor excuse right there!
Anyway, on a more prodcutive note, during daylight hours, we've been busy in Biarritz or should I say BAB(y). Such a varied local list to update you with, plus lots of fun activities we've been getting up to that you can do wherever you live. This is the list I made pre-holidays to make the most of our time together...
I know, I have a list problem... We've ticked off quite a few and have lots of plans in the offing for the rest, plus we're adding to it all the time. Since we've moved to Bidart, just south of Biarritz, we've been exploring that way a lot more and have found some amazing little gems that keep distracting me from what we already know and love. Which, I suppose, is half the point of this blog - finding out about new places and sharing our previous discoveries.

Bidart Centre plage
My love for this place has been reinforced by a gorgeous birthday picnic we had here last month. The kids adored the rock pools, caves, their 'castle' and the adults loved the amateur surf competition that was unfolding too. We're so lucky that that's much going on at the beaches - way more than just sand and sea.
Cenitz plage, Acotz and Woodstock café
What a discovery this was. Down a narrow road, like so many of the cliff beaches are here, we parked the car and followed the hand painted signs to 'Woodstock', a perfect beach café perched on open land above Cenitz plage (note this is the Cenitz at the Acotz turning near Quiksilver, not further into Guethary). Upcycled pallets, rescued driftwood and reused fruit and veg boxes - I was pretty much in heaven. Then the plat du jour of Sardines cooked on the plancha with rice and a gorgeously fresh salad came out and was most certainly having the most perfect day. The beach is gorgeous too - quite stony but rugged and interesting nonetheless. A great spot for little ones as it's somewhat of a cove and therefore much calmer than further up the coast.
The year we moved here, we had such a memorable Bastille night atop the Biarritz Casino watching the fireworks and revelry below. This year, we watched them from afar at Kostaldea, Guethary. It is such a perfect place. The kids played on beach below, in 25 degree heat at 9pm, crabbing, sandcastle making, nude running. We drank rosé, ate tapas and chatted until the sun went down and the beautiful sunset made us speechless. It's a night I won't be forgetting in a hurry.

Obviously this is now my favourite spot. All of the qualities described above, plus, delicious, fresh tapas - razor clams, stuffed mussels, chipirons and the charcuterie board are particular favourites. The
rosé is dangerously good...
And, in case little minds and hands need to be occupied...

Presents for teachers
The end of term meant present making for C's amazing teachers and ATSEMs. So, terrariums, cookies and apero baskets were made. I love giving handmade presents and really hope I can pass this on to the girls. We even managed to plant a few extra succulents to spread some greenery round the house.


Bird feeders
A friend hosted a play morning and lunch with the kids and they made bird feeders with recycled containers and adorned them with stickers and crepe paper. They're now brightening up our garden no end. Such a good way to encourage the kids to recycle and take an interest in wildlife too.
Crepemaking
Cooking with kids is always fun and crepes are so easy - they can pretty much do everything apart from the hot pan bit. Sprinkle them with a few small chunks of dark chocolate to avoid some of the sugar...
Threading

The girls were up super early one morning and C found the chunky threading beads so that was it! M still struggling a little with the finer threading so she worked on kebab sticks with cut up straws and cut up toilet roll on a rolling pin. I'm not sure how my mind worked that early. Desperation probably!


Playdough making
I started making playdough when C used to eat it - I didn't want to stop her playing with it as it's such an amazing learning tool, but I was really worried about what was going into her tummy. This recipe, for no-cook playdough is amazing and really does last forever. You can also now get naturally sourced food colouring in health food shops - the bio shop in Bidart sells it too.

Clothes washing
I really needed to get some chores done so the girls were set to work too! Little baskets were filled with the 'dirty' doll and baby clothes, plus a bowl of soapy water and one of clean and before I knew it, they were hanging out the real washing too!
I've also been busy buying from local businesses and will be sharing all over the next few days! Stay tuned...
